You know those moments where there’s music playing in the background that you’re not really listening to, you’re just kind of hearing it, and then all of a sudden a song comes on that catches your attention. Even though you’ve never heard it before, there’s something about it that grabs a hold of you, and entices you to listen a little closer. Sometimes it’s the music, sometimes it’s the rhythm, sometimes it’s the writing, and then there are those times when it’s the voice. You hear it, and you know there’s something special about it. It’s not just that the voice is really good – you can also hear the emotion behind it, the vulnerability in it, the personality of it and it all combines to create a voice that really stands out. You repeat the song a few times..and then, a couple of plays in… you’re captured. It’s got you.
We listen to a lot of music, and it’s not very often that a voice reaches out and grabs us, but that was certainly the case with Hannah Kay and her new single “I’m Gonna”.
Written by Jude Dyllan, Ashley Lee, and Hannah Kay and produced by Dyllan at Red Dirt Recording Studio, the song was penned in tribute to a childhood friend of Kay’s. “In junior high I was bullied and didn’t have any friends”, the Magnolia, Texas native said. “Then one day, Darian came up to me at lunch, sat down with me, and we become close friends. We would sing together in class and when the talent show was coming up, she made me try out, even though I told myself I’d never get on stage. Because of her, I realized this was my dream and I wanted to do it forever. Darian passed away last year on Valentine’s Day, and I didn’t know how to cope with it; so a week later, I went to Dallas and wrote this song in memory of her…” Kay concluded.
The deep-personal connection Kay has to song really bleeds through the track and is a big part of what makes her vocals so captivating on this song. The listener cannot help but empathize with the stories and future plans known only to the writer and her friend. Even though you don’t fully understand all the references of the song, we all know what it’s like to have memories that are forever in the past with the person we shared them with.
